Shire of Beverley: AR Mobile Heritage Trail App

A native tourism and heritage iOS/Android AR mobile app that helps tell the local stories and history of the Shire of Beverley as you wander through the streets.

The Client

The township of Beverley is located 138km southeast of the Western Australian capital city of Perth. Located on the Great Southern Highway, the town is within an easy one and a half hours’ drive of Perth via Brookton Highway & Westdale Road from Perth’s southern suburbs and Great Eastern & Great Southern Highways from the northern areas of the city.

The Challenge

To create a mobile AR (Augmented Reality) application for the Shire of Beverley that would compliment the existing real-world points of interests with a digital layer of historical information. The ‘Heritage Trail’ app would allow visitors to use their own phone to activate & view local history, stories and images as they wander around the town.

Our Solution

Our solution for this project involved the development of a native application for both iOS and Android platforms. The user experience is activated by scanning QR codes located along the street on existing physical displays. We created 3D models for five historical buildings, with the remaining structures represented through text photo and video content. A stylised map allows visitors to see the location of each point of interest and trail head signage with QR codes enables visitors to bring up an extra layer of information. The end result helped to tell some of the local stories and take the visitors on a travel through time to a past gone era. The app is currently available to download in both the App Store and via Google Play
