ATFA: 3D Visualisation Training Platform for Timber Flooring Experts

ATFA’s 3D visualisation platform offers an engaging and interactive training experience, utilising Matterport and Moodle API integration, guiding members through common timber flooring issues within a fully modelled virtual ‘ATFA house.

The Client

ATFA’s Timber Flooring Training Centre in Queensland is an innovative platform crafted to provide cutting-edge training for timber flooring professionals. Developed in partnership with the Queensland Government, this Centre is designed to upskill members through an immersive learning experience. The virtual environment recreates real-world flooring scenarios, allowing participants to explore and tackle common issues faced in the timber flooring industry. With a browser-based approach, the Centre ensures accessibility and flexibility in learning, positioning ATFA as a leader in industry education and professional development.

The Challenge

Developing ATFA’s interactive 3D visualisation training platform came with its fair share of challenges. Originally, the plan was to create the project using a game engine (Unity), but with a high volume of participants in mind, a more accessible approach was necessary. Shifting to a browser-based application via the Matterport platform and API allowed us to provide easy access for all users. Another key challenge was accurately modelling the ‘ATFA house’ to include the typical timber flooring issues their members encounter. Additionally, we needed to seamlessly integrate course content from Moodle using an API, while ensuring the experience remained intuitive and engaging. Facilitating the submission and review process of completed course content by ATFA staff added an extra layer of complexity to the project.

Our Solution

3D Walkabout was engaged by the Australian Timber Flooring Association (ATFA) to develop a 3D visualisation training platform for their members. Originally planned as a Unity game engine project, we pivoted to a browser-based solution to ensure it was more accessible for a larger audience. Leveraging the Matterport platform, we created an interactive ‘ATFA house’, showcasing common timber flooring challenges. Through an API integration with Moodle, users could explore the virtual space and access course content via markers. Upon completion, users submitted their progress for review by ATFA staff. This approach delivered a practical and scalable training platform, aligning with ATFA’s objectives for engaging and accessible member education.
