The Client

Discovery Parks’ Goolwa Caravan Park in South Australia is a part of the well-known Discovery Parks and G’Day Parks network. Offering a relaxing holiday experience, the park is a popular choice for families and travellers seeking to explore the region. With a range of modern facilities and a picturesque location, the Goolwa Caravan Park has become a go-to destination for holidaymakers looking for both comfort and adventure.

The Challenge

Developing a 360 virtual tour for Discovery Parks’ Goolwa Caravan Park brought its own set of challenges. The aim was to create a visually stunning and highly functional tour that would provide potential visitors with a true sense of the park’s offerings. Integrating aerial panoramas captured by drone with ground-level shots from a Matterport Pro 2 camera required careful planning to ensure a cohesive presentation. The user interface also needed to be custom-branded and intuitive, allowing viewers to navigate the tour with ease. Adding clickable hotspots to highlight key park features was essential, all while maintaining a smooth and immersive user experience. The end goal was to deliver an engaging, interactive tool for the park’s owners to showcase at their annual general meeting.

Our Solution

3D Walkabout was tasked with creating a comprehensive 360 virtual tour of Discovery Parks’ Goolwa Caravan Park, bringing together a range of high-quality visual elements. We captured aerial panoramas via drone and ground-level imagery using a Matterport Pro 2 camera to provide an all-encompassing view of the park.

These visuals were then seamlessly combined to offer viewers an immersive virtual experience. To enhance engagement, we developed a custom-branded user interface with easy-to-navigate hotspots and icons, allowing users to click through and explore different park amenities. The resulting browser-based virtual tour offered a captivating and functional tool for both the Discovery Parks team and potential visitors, meeting the client’s needs and delivering a standout showcase for the park.

FACT FILE: John is a 3D Scanning Operator at 3D Walkabout, based in Sydney, with a decade of experience in 3D design, virtual reality production, and immersive environment creation. With a background as a 3D artist and researcher, John brings deep expertise in real-time 3D production, photogrammetry, and environment design using tools such as Unreal Engine, Unity, Autodesk Maya, Substance Painter, and Reality Capture. Before joining 3D Walkabout, John worked extensively in VR/XR development and teaching at UNSW. He holds a PhD in Virtual Reality Design from the University of New South Wales.
