Put Interactive 3D Experiences Directly in the Browser

Let customers, stakeholders and project teams explore products, equipment, buildings or environments online — without specialist software or large application downloads.

WHAT IT IS

Placing a Digital Product into the Real World

Augmented reality visualisation adds a layer of digital content — a 3D product, a piece of furniture, a piece of equipment, an architectural element — on top of what the camera on a phone or tablet sees in real time. The result is a product that appears to exist in the customer’s own space, at the correct scale, before it is purchased or installed.

3D Walkabout builds browser-based AR experiences that work without asking customers to download a dedicated application. Customers tap a link — from a product page, an email, an advertisement, or a QR code at a showroom — and the product appears in their space through the camera on their device.
The format can be combined with a product configurator so the version of the product the customer places in AR is the one they have already configured — the right colour, material or specification, not a generic display version.

AR FORMATS

Two Formats — One Decision

The appropriate format depends on where the experience lives, how complex the interaction needs to be and who the audience is. Both can deliver compelling AR — the right choice is the one that gets used.

Browser Based Web AR
WEB AR

Browser-Based — No Download

The AR experience lives entirely in the browser. Customers tap a link or scan a QR code and the product appears in their space immediately — no app store, no download, no friction.

  • Works on iOS Safari and Android Chrome without any install
  • Accessible from product pages, ads, emails and QR codes
  • Lower barrier — most customers will try it if it requires no download
  • Best for consumer products, retail and ecommerce contexts
Native App AR
NATIVE APP AR

App-Based — Richer Capability

A dedicated iOS or Android application using ARKit or ARCore. Requires a download but allows more advanced placement accuracy, measurement, lighting estimation and interaction than web AR.

  • Built on ARKit (iOS) or ARCore (Android) for maximum device access
  • Supports accurate floor and wall detection, measurement tools
  • Allows richer interaction — walk around, annotate, multi-product
  • Best for high-consideration purchases and professional field use

APPLICATIONS

Where AR Visualisation Applies

01

Furniture and Interior Products

Customers place sofas, beds, tables, storage units and large appliances in their own room before buying. Returns drop. Confidence in purchase decisions increases. The experience can be triggered directly from a product page, requiring no app download.

02

Kitchen and Cabinetry

Buyers check how a kitchen layout fits their space, how doors open and how cabinetry heights relate to their ceiling and benchtop before visiting a showroom. When combined with a configurator, the AR version reflects the buyer's actual selected finish.

03

Caravans and Large Vehicles

Buyers place a miniature scaled caravan on a table to understand layout proportions, or use the full-scale version outdoors on a driveway to check physical size. Useful for dealers, shows and remote buyers who cannot easily visit the physical unit.

04

Industrial Equipment and Plant

Engineers and procurement teams place equipment in a real facility to check spatial fit, access requirements and clearances before ordering or installation. An app-based format with accurate measurement is typically required for this context.

05

Heritage, Education and Public Engagement

AR overlays a reconstructed object, building or artefact onto a real physical location or display surface. Visitors explore historical objects, architectural proposals or scientific models in a layered physical-digital experience.

THE FOUNDATION

The 3D Assets Behind the Experience

The quality of an AR experience depends directly on the quality of the underlying 3D model. A poorly optimised or inaccurate model will not read as realistic when placed in a real environment. We assess each product’s available references — CAD files, engineering drawings, photography and physical dimensions — and determine the most effective approach for producing an AR-ready asset.

01

Define the Buying Journey

We identify the users, products, choices and commercial action the configurator needs to support.

02

Structure the Product Logic

We map models, option groups, dependencies, exclusions, pricing rules and required product information.

03

Prepare the 3D Assets

Existing CAD or 3D models are assessed and optimised, or suitable product models are created from supplied references.

04

Design and Develop the Interface

We build the viewing experience, controls, selection logic and customer journey for desktop, tablet and mobile use.

05

Test Real Configurations

Your team reviews visual accuracy, allowed combinations, content and user behaviour before launch.

06

Deploy and Improve

The configurator is published, monitored and updated as products, options and sales requirements change.

WHY IT WORKS

Why AR Reduces Purchase Hesitation

The most common reason a customer hesitates before a considered purchase is uncertainty about fit — physical fit, visual fit, scale fit. AR resolves that uncertainty directly.

For Customers

For Customers

  • See the real scale of a product in their actual space
  • Check fit and clearance without measuring manually
  • Compare how different finishes look in their real lighting
  • Share a screenshot for input from a partner, designer or colleague
  • Make a more confident decision with fewer showroom visits
For the Business

For the Business

  • Reduce returns from products that did not fit or match as expected
  • Increase conversion on high-consideration purchases
  • Differentiate the digital experience from competitors without AR
  • Support remote customers who cannot visit a showroom
  • Reuse the same 3D assets across product pages, configurators and AR

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the user need to install any software?

No specialist 3D application is normally required. The experience is accessed through a supported modern web browser. The user still needs a suitable device and internet connection for the complexity of the content.

Can you use our existing CAD or BIM model?

Often, yes. Existing models can provide valuable geometry and product information, but they generally require conversion and optimisation before they are suitable for real-time web delivery.

Will web-based 3D work on mobile?

It can be designed for mobile, tablet and desktop use. The model complexity, interaction design and target device range need to be considered from the beginning rather than treating mobile as an afterthought.

Is this the same as a product configurator?

A configurator is one type of web-based 3D experience. It focuses on selectable product options and purchasing decisions. Web 3D visualisation is broader and may be used for exploration, explanation, spatial review, stakeholder communication or technical presentation.

Can users take measurements?

Measurement tools can be included where the source model and use case support them. The interface should also communicate the expected accuracy and whether measurements are indicative or suitable for a defined technical purpose.

Can the experience be embedded on our website?

Yes. It can usually be embedded within an existing page or linked as a dedicated experience. Hosting, domain, security and analytics requirements are agreed during technical scoping.

Can confidential models be protected?

Access controls and secure hosting approaches can be considered, although no browser-delivered asset should be treated as impossible to extract. Highly sensitive content requires a specific security discussion before selecting the delivery method.
