Practise the Process Around Equipment You Can See

Combine real workspaces or physical training props with virtual machinery, controls and process states to teach equipment and operational procedures.

THE CHALLENGE

Equipment training is rarely just a list of actions. The learner must understand what each component does, which condition should exist before the next step and when the procedure needs to stop.

Access to the real system may be limited, and deliberately creating faults or abnormal conditions may be impossible. Mixed reality can reproduce that relationship in a controlled training space. A real bench or simple prop can provide physical reference, while virtual components, indicators and process behaviour provide the states and consequences required for learning.

THE PROCESS JOURNEY

A Process Can Be Seen, Not Just Described

Identify stage in mixed reality equipment training
IDENTIFY

Locate components, controls, flow paths, inspection points and safety devices in relation to the complete system.

Prepare stage in mixed reality equipment training
PREPARE

Confirm permits, PPE, tools, isolation status and initial equipment conditions before beginning the task.

Diagnose stage in mixed reality equipment training
DIAGNOSE

Interpret alarms, indicators, unexpected states or performance changes and decide whether to correct, stop or escalate.

Close out stage in mixed reality equipment training
CLOSE OUT

Restore the system, verify the final state, record information and hand the equipment back through the agreed process.

SIMULATION DEPTH

Choose the Appropriate Simulation Depth

Procedural simulation in mixed reality training
DEPTH 1

Procedural Simulation

Focus on the correct order, decisions and verification steps without recreating detailed physical behaviour.

Functional equipment simulation in mixed reality
DEPTH 2

Functional Equipment Simulation

Represent component movement, equipment state and the results of learner actions where this supports understanding.

Process behaviour simulation in mixed reality training
DEPTH 3

Process Behaviour Simulation

Model selected variables, alarms or flows so learners can interpret system changes. Requires authoritative operating logic and careful validation.

Physical digital training rig in mixed reality
DEPTH 4

Physical-Digital Training Rig

Use real switches, tools or mock components with the virtual system where tactile handling materially improves the task.

WHO IT SERVES

For Operations, Maintenance and Technical Training

New Operators
Building equipment familiarity and procedural understanding before their first supervised task on the real system.
Maintainers
Rehearsing access and sequences before a planned shutdown without consuming equipment downtime or maintenance windows.
Technicians
Learning inspection and test points on equipment they do not access frequently, or before first contact with a new asset.
Supervisors
Verifying procedural decisions and confirming that approved sequences are understood before authorising real-world work.
Apprentices
Connecting theory from the classroom with equipment context in an environment where errors are consequence-free.
Contractors
Preparing for unfamiliar assets at a client site before arriving, reducing handover time and improving safety on day one.
Commissioning Teams
Explaining new equipment or process changes before the asset is live, so the team is ready before the first real operation.
CONTENT AND VALIDATION

Source Information and Validation

The virtual behaviour needs a reliable source. We can work from CAD and BIM models, manuals, drawings, photographs, process documentation, operating procedures and subject-matter expert workshops. Engineering models normally require optimisation and do not remove the need for operational validation.

APPROVAL REQUIREMENT

The client’s authorised representatives approve the procedure, equipment states, terminology and acceptable decisions before release.

OUR PROCESS

Development Path

1

Select the equipment, process and learner role

Define the specific task and the learner group before any content decisions are made.

2

Map the approved sequence, conditions and escalation rules

Document failure points, decision branches and what constitutes an unacceptable action.

3

Review available 3D assets, props and training-space constraints

Assess what can be reused, what needs to be built and what physical elements will remain real.

4

Prototype the core equipment interaction and process-state logic

Test the key interaction and equipment response before building out the full scenario.

5

Develop the complete scenario, guidance and assessment events

All scenario stages, virtual content, feedback and data capture built and integrated.

6

Validate with operations, maintenance, engineering and training teams

Authorised representatives confirm accuracy, terminology and acceptable decisions before release.

7

Pilot on the intended hardware and refine deployment and support

Run the full pilot on the target headset and document operational support and update processes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a full engineering process simulator?

Not necessarily. It can range from procedural training to selected process behaviour. A high-fidelity engineering simulation requires detailed authoritative data and a substantially different scope.

Can you use our equipment CAD models?

Often. CAD can provide geometry, but it normally needs simplification, material preparation and training-specific interaction work.

Can physical controls be included?

Yes, where tactile interaction improves the learning outcome. Physical controls, tracking and electronics add hardware and support complexity.

Can faults and alarms be simulated?

Yes. The scenario can introduce equipment states, alarms and abnormal conditions so learners practise diagnosis, safe response and escalation.

Does it replace practical competency assessment?

Usually not by itself. It can build procedural understanding and readiness, while practical competence may still need to be demonstrated on the real equipment.

Can the module support different equipment variants?

Yes, where the differences are mapped. A modular design can reuse common process logic while changing geometry, controls or procedures.

Can completion data be recorded?

Yes. Steps, errors, decisions and completion can be captured and may be connected to an LMS or training system where supported.
