Essential Energy | 3D Flythrough for Training Academy Visualisation

3D Walkabout created a detailed 3D flythrough of Essential Energy’s Training Academy, showcasing key zones and equipment to support training, planning, and stakeholder presentations.

The Client

Essential Energy is one of Australia’s largest electricity distribution networks, supplying power to regional, rural, and remote communities across New South Wales. With a strong focus on safety, reliability, and workforce capability, they invest in training and future-ready infrastructure to support the long-term resilience of the energy network.

The Challenge

The challenge for Essential Energy Training Academy wasn’t just achieving visual realism; it was ensuring technical accuracy across multiple specialised spaces designed for hands-on electrical training. Key areas such as the workshops, Mini-Grid space, innovation zones, training rooms, and shared facilities each had different functional requirements. Many of these spaces needed to include specific equipment, control systems, and electrical infrastructure, which required careful interpretation of technical briefs, drawings, and reference materials.

At the same time, parts of the scope were still being refined. Decisions about what to include in each workshop, the level of detail required for the Mini-Grid and innovation areas, and which supporting spaces were needed all had to be clarified before production could be locked in. The challenge was to define a clear and accurate visual scope, balance realism with efficiency, and ensure the final flythrough would serve as a practical tool for training, communication, and stakeholder engagement for Essential Energy.

Our Solution

We worked closely with the Essential Energy team to lock down the scope early before production began. By breaking the Training Academy into clearly defined zones, workshops, Mini-Grid, innovation areas, training rooms, and shared spaces, we ensured every part of the flythrough had a clear purpose and level of detail aligned with how the facility would be used in practice. Detailed discussions and confirmations around equipment, layouts, and inclusions allowed us to accurately represent technical assets such as control panels, electrical components, generators, and substation-style infrastructure, without over- or under-representing the space.

This was especially critical for the Mini-Grid and Innovation areas, where realism directly supported training outcomes. Using the approved architectural drawings and briefs, our team built a coordinated 3D model of the entire facility and developed a smooth, easy-to-follow flythrough that clearly communicates spatial flow, functionality, and intent. This structured approach reduced rework, kept timelines on track, and delivered a flythrough that supports internal planning, stakeholder review, and future training use.

Confirmed the scope per zone (Workshops, Mini-Grid, Innovation, training rooms, shared areas) before modelling began

Built the Training Academy in 3D using the approved drawings and briefs to keep everything consistent

Prioritised accuracy in the Mini-Grid and Innovation areas to avoid misrepresenting electrical infrastructure

Produced a smooth flythrough that shows spatial flow, functionality, and how the facility will operate

Clarified what equipment needed to appear in each space, including key technical assets for training use

Reduced rework by locking inclusions early, helping keep delivery efficient and on track
