Train the team, not just the individual

Many operational failures are not caused by one person forgetting one step. They happen between people—during a handover, a permit discussion, an emergency response, a lift, an isolation or a change in conditions.

Multi-user VR is part of the Walkabout XR product direction, designed to support coordinated practice in a shared immersive scenario.

WHEN TO USE IT

When Teamwork Is the Skill

Single-user VR is well suited to individual familiarisation, hazard recognition and procedural practice. Multi-user VR becomes valuable when success depends on communication, role clarity and a shared understanding of what is happening.

Emergency response and incident coordination
Permit-to-work and authorisation discussions
Pre-start meetings and job task planning
Spotter and operator communication
Supervisor interventions and stop-work decisions
Equipment handovers and coordinated inspections
Leadership, communication and role-based decision-making

HOW IT WORKS

A Shared Scenario, Different Responsibilities

Learner roles in a shared VR training scenario
LEARNER ROLES

Different responsibilities.
Same scenario.

Each participant can be assigned a different responsibility, information set or task within the same simulated event.

Facilitator role in shared VR training
FACILITATOR ROLE

A trainer or supervisor can guide the exercise, observe key moments and use the session as the basis for a structured debrief.

SCENARIO RESPONSE

The environment can react to collective decisions, missed communications or the sequence in which the team acts, subject to module design and available functionality.

WHY IT WORKS

The Value Is in the Debrief

A shared VR session creates a common experience that teams can discuss immediately. Instead of asking what people might do in a hypothetical event, the facilitator can refer to what actually unfolded in the scenario.

That makes it easier to examine assumptions, communication gaps, role confusion and the point at which the team's plan began to drift.

SESSION STRUCTURE

Multi-User Session Concept

Facilitator briefing participants before a VR training session
BRIEF

Allocate roles, learning objectives and the operating context.

→
Participants entering a shared VR training environment
ENTER

Participants join the shared environment and orient themselves to the task.

→
Participants communicating and acting inside a shared VR scenario
ACT

The team communicates, makes decisions and completes role-specific actions.

→
Virtual scenario responding to team actions
RESPOND

The scenario changes in line with the designed events and decisions.

→
Facilitator debriefing participants after a VR session
DEBRIEF

The facilitator reviews the outcome and connects it back to workplace expectations.

DEPLOYMENT

Deployment Considerations

Multi-user training requires more than several headsets. A successful rollout needs the right physical space, facilitator process, device configuration, connectivity assumptions, participant-to-headset ratio and contingency plan.

Walkabout XR deployments can include configured Meta Quest 3 headsets, application installation, remote device management through ArborXR, onboarding and remote support. The exact requirements for a shared session will depend on the module and the available multi-user release.

PHYSICAL SPACE

Enough clear floor area for all participants to move safely, with defined boundaries and no uncontrolled entry during sessions.

FACILITATOR PROCESS

A trained facilitator who understands the scenario, the roles and how to run the debrief. The facilitator is as important as the technology.

DEVICE CONFIGURATION

Each headset configured, charged and assigned. Remote management through ArborXR keeps content and settings consistent across the fleet.

CONNECTIVITY

Network requirements vary with the session design. Local and cloud options have different implications for latency, reliability and offline use.

GROUP SIZE

Participant limits vary with the scenario and technical design. Group size is recommended based on the learning objective, not headset availability.

CONTINGENCY PLAN

What happens when a headset fails mid-session, a participant needs to stop or connectivity drops. Planned before the first session, not after.

STATUS

Product Status

Multi-user VR training is an evolving Walkabout XR capability and should not be assumed to be included in every current deployment. We will confirm what is available, suitable and technically practical for your proposed use case before recommending a pilot.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do all learners need to be in the same physical location?

That depends on the session design, networking approach and current platform capability. The deployment model will be confirmed during technical scoping.

Can a trainer participate in the scenario?

Facilitator and supervisor involvement is part of the intended multi-user direction, but specific controls depend on the release and module.

How many people can join?

Participant limits vary with the scenario and technical design. We will recommend a group size that supports the learning objective rather than maximising headset count.
