Augmented Reality (AR) for Military & Law Enforcement

Augmented reality (AR) holds significant potential for the military and law enforcement sectors. In training, AR can provide realistic simulations and scenarios, allowing new recruits to practice and enhance their skills in a safe and controlled environment. It enables interactive and immersive training experiences that bridge the gap between theory and real-world situations. AR can also be leveraged to engage the general public and stakeholders. It enables the visualisation of future projects, equipment, and proposed facilities, offering stakeholders a clear understanding of the plans. AR can be used in public demonstrations, allowing individuals to experience virtual tours or participate in interactive presentations. Additionally, AR applications on glasses/headsets and mobile devices provide on-site information, real-time data, and enhanced situational awareness, empowering military and law enforcement personnel in their operations.

How is AR is currently being used by Military & Law Enforcement ?

AR technologies are currently being used by both the military and law enforcement across the world. Most recently, law enforcement uses AR technology to improve an officer’s efficiency when approaching various assignments and tasks which is heavily aided by the ability to overlay information onto real-world perspectives. Some international law enforcement also combines AR technologies with AI so that suspects are more easily identifiable when working in conjunction with facial recognition software. AR has a positive impact on the preservation of key evidence of an investigation, with the technology working to capture evidence digitally without running the risk of officers tainting evidence by entering the scene.

The military predominantly uses AR technologies to improve the situational awareness of troops. The technology enables troops to determine their location whilst also making it easier for them to identify surrounding troops or potential enemy troops. The use of AR has the potential to simplify and improve the decision-making process of troops on the front line, which is what the technology is currently being studied and tested for. Both law enforcement and the military in certain areas are beginning to enhance their training programs with the use of AR technology.
