City of Canning Unreal Engine 5 | Interactive Digital Twin Development

3D Walkabout built an interactive UE5 city model for the City of Canning with custom UI, data layers, and the foundations of a digital twin.

The Client

The City of Canning is a local government area in Perth, Western Australia, delivering services and infrastructure to support its growing community. The council focuses on sustainability, innovation, and community development across its diverse suburbs.

The Challenge

The City of Canning needed a fully interactive 3D model of their city that could be used by planners, stakeholders, and internal teams to better understand the urban environment and test future developments. The aim was to go beyond static maps and renders, creating a tool where users could fly through the city, explore layers of information, and integrate new building models directly into the environment.

A key challenge was ensuring the system was flexible and expandable. It had to allow for importing external 3D models from tools like Blender and QGIS, align them correctly within the Unreal Engine 5 environment, and maintain a smooth, professional user experience. On top of that, the build needed to feature a clear and intuitive user interface with toggles, layers, and screenshot functionality,  effectively laying the groundwork for a future digital twin of the city.

Our Solution

We developed a fully interactive UE5 application that allowed the City of Canning to explore a detailed 3D model of the city. The build included an upgraded interface with toggles, layers, and a screenshot function, giving users an intuitive way to navigate and capture views. A major focus was ensuring accuracy, with model adjustments to key sites like Ranford Road Station and careful alignment of the city’s origin point.

To make the platform future-proof, we integrated a workflow for importing external datasets, including Blender models and QGIS files, so new buildings and infrastructure could be dropped into the environment with ease. This gave planners the flexibility to test and visualise future developments in real-time while laying the foundation for the project to grow into a full digital twin of the City of Canning.

Corrected and optimised the Ranford Road Station model and realigned the city’s origin point for accuracy

Standardised coordinates so new buildings could be accurately placed in the environment

Integrated workflows for importing external 3D models from Blender and QGIS

Designed an upgraded user interface with toggles, layers, and screenshot functionality for easy navigation

Positioned the platform as the foundation of a future digital twin for the City of Canning

Structured the backend for scalability and flexibility, allowing future enhancements

Built a standalone Unreal Engine 5 (UE5) application to visualise the City of Canning in 3D

Ensured the interface remained intuitive and user-friendly, even for non-technical users

Delivered a fly-through experience of the city for planners and stakeholders
