Kelso High School: 3D Digital Reconstruction of Lost Campus

The Client

Kelso High School is a public secondary school in Kelso, Washington, dedicated to academic excellence and student development. With strong academic programs, athletics, and extracurricular activities, it prepares students for higher education and career success while fostering a supportive learning environment.

The Challenge

Recreating the former Kelso High School in a 3D digital format presented several challenges. The primary objective was to preserve the school’s legacy after it was lost to fire, allowing alumni and the community to revisit the building as it once stood. This required an accurate and immersive 3D experience that not only captured the architectural details but also reflected the emotional connection people had with the school.

Ensuring historical accuracy was a key challenge, as the reconstruction relied on archival photos, alumni input, and limited existing records. The project also needed to balance cinematic storytelling with an interactive experience, combining a detailed exterior flythrough with an engaging interior walkthrough featuring panoramic views and interactive hotspots. Coordinating these elements while maintaining authenticity required careful planning, iteration, and collaboration to bring Kelso High School back to life in a meaningful way.

Our Solution

To bring Kelso High School back to life digitally, we developed a highly detailed 3D experience that combined historical accuracy with immersive storytelling. Using archival photos, alumni contributions, and architectural references, we meticulously reconstructed the school’s exterior and interior, ensuring an authentic recreation of its original design.

The solution included a cinematic flythrough of the exterior, providing a striking visual representation of the school’s structure and layout. Inside, we crafted an interactive virtual tour, allowing users to explore classrooms, hallways, and common areas with panoramic views and integrated hotspots. These features enabled visitors to engage with key historical details, such as classroom layouts, signage, and furnishings, preserving the school’s legacy in a dynamic and interactive format. By combining advanced 3D modelling with aerial imagery and virtual tour technology, we created a seamless and engaging experience that not only serves as a nostalgic tribute but also as a permanent digital archive of Kelso High School.

FACT FILE: Phil Jacovelli is a 3D Scanning Operator at 3D Walkabout, based in Melbourne, with extensive experience in Matterport scanning, property photography, and digital media production. Combining strong technical expertise with creative flair, Phil captures real-world spaces with precision and delivers high-quality virtual tours that showcase every detail. With a background spanning engineering, IT, and visual media, Phil has developed a rare blend of technical and creative skills. He is proficient with Matterport Pro2 & 3 cameras, AutoCAD and SketchUp for 3D modelling.

JOHN BAILEY

3D SCANNING OPERATOR (NSW) - ‘J-SCAN’
FACT FILE: John is a 3D Scanning Operator at 3D Walkabout, based in Sydney, with a decade of experience in 3D design, virtual reality production, and immersive environment creation. With a background as a 3D artist and researcher, John brings deep expertise in real-time 3D production, photogrammetry, and environment design using tools such as Unreal Engine, Unity, Autodesk Maya, Substance Painter, and Reality Capture. Before joining 3D Walkabout, John worked extensively in VR/XR development and teaching at UNSW. He holds a PhD in Virtual Reality Design from the University of New South Wales.
