Swinburne University: 3D Virtual Tour of CSIRO Industry 4.0 Testlab

An interactive 3D virtual tour of Swinburne’s CSIRO Testlab, created for public engagement and marketing, complete with flythrough visuals, info points, and online hosting.

The Client

Swinburne University of Technology is a Melbourne-based university known for its focus on innovation and industry collaboration. Its CSIRO Industry 4.0 Testlab supports advanced manufacturing through cutting-edge 3D printing technology, helping drive digital transformation in sectors like aerospace and automotive.

The Challenge

Creating Swinburne University’s virtual tour of the CSIRO Industry 4.0 Testlab came with several challenges. The main objective was to design an immersive 3D experience that accurately captured the facility while supporting marketing and public engagement goals. This required precise planning around site access, scanning logistics, and ensuring technical accuracy throughout the space.

Privacy requirements, such as blurring sensitive logos and branding, added another layer of complexity, along with the need to incorporate interactive info points and flythrough visuals. Coordinating feedback and approvals across multiple university departments and ensuring seamless web integration also required close collaboration and clear communication throughout the project.

Our Solution

3D Walkabout was tasked with creating a virtual tour of Swinburne University’s CSIRO Industry 4.0 Testlab to support marketing and public engagement. The goal was to provide an accurate, interactive experience that allowed visitors to explore the facility remotely and understand its advanced capabilities. To achieve this, we conducted a detailed site scan and produced a web-hosted 3D tour featuring smooth navigation, flythrough visuals, and embedded content. Sensitive logos were blurred during post-production to meet privacy requirements, and interactive information points were added to guide users through the space.

Throughout the project, we worked closely with Swinburne’s internal teams to manage feedback, approvals, and technical requirements. The tour was integrated into the university’s website, making it easily accessible to external stakeholders. By aligning our 3D capture process with the university’s brand and communication needs, we delivered a high-quality, engaging digital tool that continues to serve as a key asset for outreach. The project’s success highlights the value of interactive virtual tours in enhancing visibility and accessibility for cutting-edge facilities like the Testlab.
