WesTrac: 3D Virtual Walkthrough of Parts Distribution Centre

A full 3D walkthrough of WesTrac’s 12,000sqm Parts Distribution Centre and hose shop, designed for internal use, inductions, and stakeholder engagement—delivered on a streamlined budget with interactive floorplan and dollhouse views.

The Client

WesTrac is one of Australia’s leading Caterpillar dealers, providing heavy equipment and support services to the mining and construction industries. With major operations across Western Australia, New South Wales, and the ACT, WesTrac is known for its scale, innovation, and operational excellence. Its state-of-the-art Parts Distribution Centre (PDC) in WA is a vital hub that ensures fast, efficient delivery of parts and components across the region.

The Challenge

Capturing the scale and functionality of WesTrac’s 12,000sqm Parts Distribution Centre (PDC) and hose shop in Western Australia presented several challenges. The client needed a digital solution that could be used for remote staff inductions, internal communications, and stakeholder engagement—without physically visiting the site.

The project also needed to be delivered within a strict $4,000 budget, significantly lower than standard industry pricing for a full 3D site capture. Balancing cost-efficiency with quality was a key priority. Streamlining the onboarding and approval process was essential to stay on schedule, particularly as the work had to align with internal procedures and prior collaborations.

Our Solution

3D Walkabout was engaged to create a high-quality 3D virtual walkthrough of WesTrac’s PDC and hose shop that would meet internal needs while staying within budget. The goal was to provide an accurate and immersive digital twin that could support inductions, planning, and stakeholder communication. To do this, we completed a full 3D scan of the facility, capturing the entire space in detail. The final product featured a smooth, interactive walkthrough with both floorplan and dollhouse views. By exploring alternative rendering approaches and offering a 66% discount on standard pricing, we delivered a solution that matched WesTrac’s budget without compromising on visual quality.

Thanks to a previously established working relationship with the WesTrac team, the project moved quickly through onboarding and approvals. The result was a highly practical and accessible digital asset that enhances visibility and communication across WesTrac’s internal teams. Thorough testing across devices will resolve technical issues, including caching problems. Finalising scripts before recording voiceovers and establishing a structured approval process for animations will minimise revisions. A clear finalisation process will ensure all elements are approved before project completion, reducing delays and improving workflow efficiency
