The Client

The Shire of Beverley is a vibrant community dedicated to preserving its rich heritage while embracing innovative ways to engage visitors. Known for its charming historical buildings and unique stories, the Shire offers a glimpse into its fascinating past.

Through initiatives like the Vincent Street Heritage Walk app, the Shire continues to celebrate its history, providing residents and visitors with immersive experiences that connect them to the region’s cultural legacy.

The Challenge

Developing the Vincent Street Heritage Walk application presented several unique challenges. The primary objective was to create an engaging and accessible experience for visitors that seamlessly combined physical and digital elements. This required designing a native application for both iOS and Android platforms that could effectively utilise QR codes placed on existing physical displays along the street. The integration of historical storytelling through 3D models, alongside text, photo, and video content for non-modelled structures, demanded careful attention to detail. Creating accurate and visually appealing 3D representations of five historical buildings while maintaining a cohesive narrative for the other sites required collaboration across various creative disciplines.

Additionally, incorporating a stylised map and trailhead signage into the app posed a challenge in ensuring intuitive navigation for users while maintaining an aesthetically pleasing design. Balancing the technical requirements for QR code scanning and information accessibility with the need for an immersive, user-friendly experience required meticulous planning and execution. Ultimately, delivering a solution that preserved the integrity of the local stories and transported visitors to a bygone era while aligning with modern digital standards was a complex yet rewarding challenge.

Our Solution

3D Walkabout was engaged to enhance the visitor experience along Vincent Street by bringing its rich history to life through an innovative digital solution. The client required an interactive way to showcase the street’s heritage, allowing visitors to explore its past while engaging with the present-day environment. To achieve this, we developed a native mobile application for both iOS and Android platforms. The app’s core feature is its seamless integration with QR codes, which are strategically placed on existing physical displays along the street. These QR codes unlock an immersive user experience, providing access to a variety of historical content.

We meticulously created 3D models of five key historical buildings, ensuring every detail was faithfully represented to capture their unique architectural charm. For the remaining sites, we incorporated text, photo, and video content, offering a rich and engaging tapestry of stories for visitors to explore. A stylised map was designed to highlight the location of each point of interest, while trailhead signage with embedded QR codes provided an intuitive way for users to access additional layers of information. This digital solution enabled visitors to journey through time, experiencing the local stories engagingly and interactively. By combining 3D modelling, multimedia content, and a user-friendly interface, we successfully transformed Vincent Street into a living history experience.

The app is now live and available for download on the App Store and Google Play, providing users with a unique and accessible way to connect with the area’s heritage.
