ATCO’s Energy Hub: Interactive 3D Walkthrough

Discover how ATCO used 3D virtual tours to highlight hydrogen-powered living and clean energy infrastructure, captured by 3D Walkabout using Matterport technology.

The Client

ATCO Australia is a subsidiary of the global ATCO Group, delivering integrated energy, housing, and infrastructure solutions across the country. With a strong focus on innovation and sustainability, ATCO is at the forefront of hydrogen energy development in Australia. The company is known for its commitment to building a cleaner energy future through cutting-edge technology, strategic partnerships, and community-focused initiatives. Headquartered in Perth, ATCO continues to lead the way in advancing alternative energy solutions that support long-term environmental and economic goals.

The Challenge

ATCO needed a way to showcase its cutting-edge hydrogen technologies—including a residential display home, refuelling station, and hydrogen blending facilities—to stakeholders, partners, and the public. Traditional media lacked the interactivity and depth required to explain these complex systems. With limitations on drone use due to site restrictions and the need to capture both indoor and outdoor environments, the challenge was to create a single, seamless virtual experience that was both visually engaging and technically informative—without relying on in-person site access.

Our Solution

3D Walkabout delivered a fully integrated 3D virtual tour experience that brought ATCO’s hydrogen innovation to life. Using advanced Matterport scanning and 3D capture technology, the team created immersive walkthroughs of both the display home and the hydrogen infrastructure sites—all completed within a single visit. To address the technical complexity and limited site access, interactive Mattertags were embedded throughout the tour to explain key features such as hydrogen appliances, fuel cells, and refuelling systems. A custom overlay menu was implemented to enable smooth navigation between areas, with the entire experience optimised for both mobile and web platforms.

The result was a highly professional, accessible, and informative virtual showcase that ATCO now uses across internal presentations, stakeholder engagement, and public education initiatives. A custom overlay menu was added to improve navigation, allowing viewers to jump between different sections of the home seamlessly. The tour was designed to be intuitive for public users while also providing the technical depth required for stakeholders and partners. Everything was captured in a single scanning session, using advanced Matterport and 3D scanning equipment to ensure spatial accuracy and visual fidelity, resulting in a virtual showcase that’s both engaging and informative.
