DFES WA– Matterport Virtual Tour for Bushfire Centre

A 3D virtual tour of the Bushfire Centre of Excellence, allowing remote exploration of key training and education spaces using Matterport. The interactive experience supports stakeholder engagement, orientation, and bushfire preparedness training, and includes additional coverage of Training Room 3 and updated external features.

The Client

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) is Western Australia’s lead agency for emergency management, providing critical response to bushfires, floods, and other hazards. DFES also focuses on community safety through education, training, and preparedness programs delivered across the state.

The Challenge

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES, WA) asked 3D Walkabout to create a high-quality 3D virtual tour of the Bushfire Centre of Excellence to improve how they present the facility online. The main goal was to give stakeholders a clear and immersive way to explore the centre remotely, with a focus on areas that support bushfire education and training.

One of the key challenges was filming active spaces while they were still being used, which meant we had to plan carefully and work around live sessions. The virtual tour needed to feel natural and complete, which included capturing key rooms like Training Room 3. This part of the facility wasn’t ready to be scanned at the start, so a follow-up visit had to be organised. Another challenge involved keeping the visual content up to date, including newly installed garden features and changes to signage. Making sure all these elements were captured correctly meant working closely with DFES to time everything right and to make sure the final tour would be useful for training, inductions, and promoting the centre’s work to the wider community.

Our Solution

To help DFES present the Bushfire Centre of Excellence online, 3D Walkabout used Matterport scanning to build a clear, interactive 3D virtual tour. The scan covered important areas used for training and education, giving users an easy way to explore the space from anywhere.

We worked closely with DFES to plan the shoot around the centre’s busy schedule, avoiding disruptions during training. Since Training Room 3 wasn’t available at first, we arranged a second visit to finish the tour properly. We also made sure to include new garden features and updated signage so the final tour matched the current  layout. The completed virtual tour gave DFES a flexible digital tool for training, inductions, and public engagement, helping them share their work with a wider audience.

Used Matterport technology to create a high-quality, interactive virtual tour that allows users to move through the facility as if they were there in person
